[Personal Insight] Trying to Work from a Cafe in Hanoi

[Personal Insight] Trying to Work from a Cafe in Hanoi

Hanoi is famous for its vibrant cafe culture, and everywhere you look, there’s a stylish spot. I used to think, “If I can get my work done for just the price of a coffee, that would be perfect.” So, I gave it a try.

However, once I actually tried using a cafe as a “workspace,” I encountered “walls” far higher than I imagined. As an intern, I want to share the definitive differences I experienced between working at a cafe versus a coworking space.

1. The Wall of Cleanliness: Environment Dictates Focus

  • At the Cafe: Issues with the hygiene of the facilities, dishes, and especially the restrooms are common. Sticky tables or insufficient cleaning can instantly drain your motivation to work.

  • At the Coworking Space: D-WORK PLACE is impeccably clean. Beyond the standard morning cleaning, staff members circulate during business hours to maintain a spotless environment. This “Japanese-standard cleanliness” is the secret to sustaining high levels of concentration.

2. The Wall of Noise and Air: Challenges Unique to Vietnam

  • At the Cafe: It’s not just the chatter of people around you; the roar of motorbikes and cars from outside cuts right through. Without soundproofing, honking horns often disrupt web meetings. Furthermore, exhaust fumes drifting in every time the door opens become a major stressor during long working sessions.

  • At the Coworking Space: A quiet sanctuary shielded from external noise. For critical meetings where sound is a priority, you can use our dedicated private Phone Booths (paid service) to completely block out distractions.

3. The Wall of Infrastructure and Security: Tools for Professionals

  • At the Cafe: Wi-Fi is often non-existent or painfully slow. Seats with power outlets are a constant battleground, leaving you working while glancing anxiously at your battery life. Most importantly, the security risk—“I can’t leave my laptop to go to the restroom”—doubles your mental fatigue.

  • At the Coworking Space: Every seat is equipped with a power outlet and high-speed Wi-Fi. We provide robust network security via UTM devices (WatchGuard Firebox), ensuring peace of mind for business use. It is an environment where you can step away to the restroom without anxiety. Plus, complimentary beverage service is included.

【Conclusion】 Prioritize “Performance” over “Price”

While cafes are wonderful for a “break,” they present too much “noise” for serious “work.”

Being liberated from the anxiety of clutching your laptop to run to the restroom allows you to produce results in an environment equal to, or even better than, what you’d find in Japan. I am now convinced that choosing a coworking space (or office) as an investment in productivity is the most rational choice for any leader working in Vietnam.
